Krutitskoye Podvorye

A small complex or “yard” (podvorye) of 17th century buildings that gets its name from the steep (krutoy) bank of the nearby Moskva River

The Krutitskoy monastery was founded in the 13th century. At the time it was situated on the left bank of the Moskva River, which was very steep (Russian: krutoy). Since the second half of the 15th century it served as the residence, first of bishops, then of the senior Metropolitan of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Its centrepiece is a Cathedral of the Assumption (Uspenskiy Sobor) constructed entirely of brick - onion domes included.

It is connected by an overhead arcade to the Metropolitan's Palace in the far corner of the yard.

The arcade passes through an impressive arched structure called the Teremok, the northern facade of which is decorated with turquoise tiles in colourful floral designs and beautiful window frames carved like grapevines.

It was restored by P.D. Baranovski and his team in the 1950's.

In the mid-18th century Catherine the Great had turned it into military barracks.

There is still an army camp around the back.
